What you should know about crash diets that work
During the course of 20 + years as a personal trainer, many customers have asked about crash diets that work. Usually, I explain that crash diets can result in rapid weight loss. However, most crash diets have built in some limitations that may be problematic. I also help my clients understand what those limitations are, so they can make an informed decision on whether or not to participate.
Most crash diets that work, either dramatically reduce intake of calories, or restrict signifficantly dietary options. In both cases, the body running "itself into a period of severe deprivation. Humans are mammals least certain mechanisms have bulit governing how to burn calories during periods when food intake is low.
A good example of these mechanisms at work occurs during hibernation. Many mammals are food-limited for long periods of consumption. In order to maintain living mammals in hibernation, their metabolisms have evolved into a sharp slowdown during these periods.
It is the natural way to preserve the species.
Interestingly, a slowdown similar metabolism occurs in the course of many crash diets. In fact, many people report little or no loss of weight for many long periods of severe calorie restriction. The fact of the matter is that your metabolism gets slower and slower the bigger the crash diet is followed.
Most crash diets that work, work well at first, not as the diet progresses.
The worst thing is that after an individual returns to "normal" eating, the body forward to the fat deposits in an effort to "arm" themselves against a further period of deprivation.
It is exactly the same integrated process in our 'wild' cousins! They actively replenish fat stores ater a long winter of hibernation.
This process is part of the reason why many crash dieters regain more weight than he lost, after leaving the crash diets.
