Fat Burner Supplements: the truth

Fat Burner supplements are advertised everywhere these days – on the Internet, in magazines and even television. The ads almost always have a very lean fitness model or bodybuilder and claim that these products, usually pills, are the secret to their six pack abs and low body fat levels. Some of these ads suggest that the only way to get as lean as the "hot chick" you see in the picture is through their "birth miracle "and that proper nutrition and exercise alone is not enough.

Although I will not dismiss the fact that there are ingredients in some fat "burner" products that can help a bit, I take great displeasure at seeing misleading advertising claims and misleading use of models are often paid to endorse the product even though they have never even used (they are just models!)

Many "fat burner" companies have been sued by the Federal Trade Commission for false advertising, false claims and falsifying before and after photos.

The best thing get is a slight thermogenic effect and possibly some slight appetite suppression. Some products may work through other mechanisms like improving thyroid, But if I forgive the generalization, I consider that the effects of all these "fat burner" to minutiae.

In one of my previous newsletters, I said in my opinion, 97% of your results come from nutrition and training and maybe get a bonus of 3% supplements. Just so you know the numbers do not are something that took me out of nowhere, here's an example:

I have reviewed the scientific data that EGCG, the active ingredient in green tea extract, if consumed in sufficient quantity, could increase thermogenesis / metabolic rate by an average of about 75 calories in 24 hours. Since ephedrine was taken off the market, green tea extract appears in many ephedra-free formulas these days. What is a typical calorie expenditure for an active man in 24 hours? say 2700 calories per day. 75/2700 = 2.7%.

That does little more damage, especially when delivered in a healthful package such as green tea (Instead of the central nervous system stimulants), but it's minutia in the bigger picture. Another way to put this into perspective is to list what other things are burned 75 Calories (per person from 150 pounds:)

* Walk your dog for 15 minutes * walk for 5 minutes at normal casual pace three times a day * 30 minutes of ironing * Bagging leaves and grass clippings for 14 minutes * re arrange your furniture for 10 minutes * wash the car, 15 minutes * vacuuming for 15 minutes * 7.2 minutes to climb stairs (could be extended throughout the day)

Of course, some people wonder, "Why strive if we could take a pill increases your metabolism while you sit and watch TV? "

This is what any good personal trainer will always tell you: No amount of calorie restriction or pill-popping will ever FITNESS. Never give strength. Never get muscles. Never give functionality. At best it will help reduce their body mass.

And what about for your health? A body is not moved rot. Unlike a car that only has so many miles on it and spent most commonly used, people are the only "machines" on earth that fall apart under-utilization.

On the one hand, I am tempted to say that everything counts and that yes, 75 calories here and 75 calories there, it all adds up, because it does. After you exercise regularly and all your fundamentals are in place, details and little things are important.

I'm just asking you to put the profits of any fat burners in proper perspective and realize that (1) there is no "need" for its adoption, and (2) the claims made in ads are often erroneous or exaggerated.

My advice on fat burners:

1. Never buy a fat burner unless you get independent verification of claims made for the product.

How do you know that really work? Are you going to take seriously the call for advertisers? Are you going to take another person's testimony as a fact? Get verification for yourself by going to the pub med database and searching for primary research.

2. Put in perspective

With products that work, such as providing a small thermogenic effect, since in perspective about how easily they can burn calories even with light exercise like walking or housework. Consider the adequacy and strength will get additional benefits of exercise compared with doing nothing and popping a pill.

3. See if there are any side effects or health warnings.

With all supplements and especially with prohormones or stronger thermogenics such as ephedrine and caffeine stack, (if you still have access to them), understand the risk to benefit, and be sure you know the dangers and contraindications.

4. Read the label and see if the product contains enough active ingredient to work yet.

A classic scam is when a "fat burner" Advertising cites research inredient certain increases metabolism, which could be true. What I can not tell you is that all research with positive results uses a large amount of ingredients, which can not be cheap. So the supplement company includes a "pinch" or "dusting" of that ingredient just so they can say it's in the bottle, although it is nothing more than "label decoration." Then they have the audacity to invoke the research studies in their advertisements when the amount of the ingredient in its product is nowhere near what was used in the investigation!

5. Beware of mixing patented scam.

Some companies will not let you see the amount of an ingredient in the product formula, because it contains multiple ingredients and say their formula operation is a "secret" alias "property, so the list of what is in the product, but not much. Well, if you do not know how much There, then, how are you supposed to know if it contains the proper dosage? (Answer: do not!)

6. Make sure there is research human, not just rodent research.

In many cases, advertisements cite studies in rats and mice as "proof" under the assumption that the product producing the same results in humans. Animal research is an important part of the scientific method as it is often used to help find areas research where human study pursued, or in the other direction, to track the mechanism that makes something work. However, for obesity research in particular, a positive result in rats is not the same will happen in humans.

7. You can search more than one human study.

Consider the possibility of trying a supplement after the human research that has been repeated by different research groups are not sponsored by industry. My policy is that usually only give a "buy" to a supplement when a product has a first well-designed human controlled trial published and then similar research has been replicated by another research group that is not supplement-industry funded. In fact, I think it's a good thing that nutrition and finance companies and complete some of the research sponsors. Deben. Not only must support their claims with published clinical trials, to be shared part of the cost of this expensive research.

However, a basic principle of scientific method is replication. Other researchers should be able to duplicate the findings. Therefore, while the source of funding does not necessarily prove bias, if there is only one study is available in a supplement and is sponsored by the company or industry, usually takes with a grain of salt and put an asterisk next to him while awaiting confirmation of another study. (You might be surprised at how low Often this type of confirmation occurs).

Do you really need "more" than nutrition and exercise?

Now, when you weigh the fact that even products with research backing them only help a little with the fact that many of the ads lie about the investigation, exaggerate claims and hide vital information about ingredients, and the fact that you can do a few more minutes of exercise per day and get the same results for free, the excitement is about fat burners? Yes, that's why I'm not thrilled with them either and based on the fact that drug use and is "fat burner" supplements and compete in bodybuilding – very successfully – I'd say that the statement, "it takes more than nutrition and exercise to get six pack abs "is patently false.
