Ephedra can cause death. Ephedra is an herb used in dietary supplements sold as weight-loss aid and energy booster that have been associated with serious health problems, including hypertension, irregular heartbeat, stroke brain and convulsions. Some of these problems resulted in death or injury in previously healthy people. The Food and Drug Administration U.S. (FDA) has convincing data showing that health risks posed by ephedra reasonable and serious threat to consumers. According to an analysis published in the journal Annals of Internal Medicine in February, products containing ephedra accounted for 64% of all adverse reactions herbal products reported to the American Association of Poison Control Centers in 2001. The researchers calculated the relative risk of an adverse reaction to ephedra compared with other herbs in the database and found massive (100-fold or more) increased risk for people taking ephedra. The American Medical Association has called for the removal of ephedra from the market. In addition, a number of other organizations representing athletes, including the International Olympic Committee National Football League and the National Collegiate Athletic Association, have already banned ephedra use among its members and players. On February 17 the death of pitcher Baltimore Orioles' Steve Bechler has focused its attention on the dangers of ephedra. Bechler, 23, died of heatstroke after practical training spring.
